Description
The Crown Inn is a public house with a core dating from the mid 16th century, featuring significant alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The building has two storeys and four windows, constructed with timber framing and plaster, while the lower storey is underbuilt in 19th century plastered brickwork. It has a plaintiled roof and mid 19th century sash windows with small panes, one of which includes side-lights. There are two 19th century entrance doorways, each adorned with moulded architraves, oblong fanlights, and cornices on carved brackets; one doorway features a six-panelled door, while the other has a pair of doors with three panels each.
Inside, the public bar reveals exposed main first floor beams, each with ogee mouldings and sunk soffits carved with linked circles, indicating that the upper storey was originally jettied at the front. A wide 17th century open fireplace with a cambered lintel is also present. At the rear, there is a two-bay timber-framed wing, likely from the late 16th century, which has an arch-braced open truss in the rear wall and has been truncated. The cellar appears to be original but has undergone alterations. A ground floor room contains a well-crafted late 18th century corner cupboard. Additionally, there is a small lower extension from around 1800, made of painted brick and pantiled, along with other brick and concrete plaintiled extensions added to the right and rear in the mid 20th century. Until the 19th century, this establishment was known as The Griffin Inn.
