Description
This is a house, originally a farmhouse, dating from the early to mid 15th century, with alterations made in the mid 19th century. The building follows an H-plan, consisting of a central open-hall flanked by cross wings. Originally timber-framed, the exterior was re-faced in the mid 19th century with red brick, with the cross wings featuring flat pilaster buttresses and a dentilled eaves course. The roofs are tiled, with the wings having been hipped in the 18th or 19th century. The building retains chimneys from the 16th century and later. The windows are small-pane sash windows set within brick arches, either cambered or flat. A 19th-century six-panelled door, with the upper panels glazed, is located in a cross-entry position. The original timber framing is of high quality and largely intact, featuring close studwork and some tension bracing. The two-bay open hall has an open truss with a massive arched tie-beam, the arch braces having been cut back. It also includes an octagonal crown post with a well-moulded capital and base, and four-way solid bracing. The parlour wing to the right has an ogee-moulded binding joist, while the solar features an open crown post truss and a blocked doorway with a four-centred head. All crown-post roofs remain complete. A first floor was inserted into the hall in the 17th century, and attic floors were added throughout the building. A good 18th-century corner cupboard is located in a parlour within the service wing. A two-storey extension, potentially incorporating some earlier fabric, was added to the left side in the early 20th century.
