Description

The Old Rectory is a building that originally served as a rectory and is now a company headquarters. It dates from the mid-16th century and has undergone significant alterations over several periods. The structure has two storeys, with a 16th-century parlour wing on the right and a service range, likely from the 18th century, on the left. The central hall range was rebuilt around 1930. The earlier work features timber framing and plaster, with plaintiled roofs and axial and external chimneys made of red brick. Most of the windows are early 19th-century sash windows with small panes.

On the garden side of the cross-wing, there are two 18th-century sash windows with segmental heads. The centre of this wing features a small two-storeyed gabled projection, possibly from the 16th century, which may have served as a staircase wing. Inside the cross-wing, there are moulded first and attic floor joists and notable close-studwork; the attic floor was added around 1600. The rebuilt hall range consists of rendered masonry with limestone windows and an entrance doorway designed in the Elizabethan style. The first floor incorporates reused 16th-century moulded floor joists similar to those in the parlour.

The Reverend George Drury, who lived here from 1819 to 1895, was involved in a national scandal concerning a burial at the nearby parish of Akenham while he was the incumbent at this rectory.
