Description
The Old House (Number 49) is a terrace of three houses, now comprising a house, a flat, and two shops. It dates from the mid-18th century and was extended on both sides in the early 19th century, with a conversion to its current use in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of colourwashed brick and features roofs made of pantiles, plain tiles, and slate. It has an internal gable end stack to the left, a central ridge stack, and a ridge stack to the right of centre, which was formerly located at the gable end.
The exterior consists of two storeys and a dormer attic, with a ten-window front. The five central window bays are separated from the rest by giant pilasters with block capitals, with the right pilaster truncated to accommodate a recessed door for No.49. The door for No.49 is six-panelled with glazed upper panels and is accessed by steps. To the right, there is a subsidiary doorway and an additional inserted 20th-century sash window.
No.51 features a 20th-century plate glass door in a timber doorcase with fluted pilasters and a plain entablature, positioned beside a 20th-century bowed shop display window. No.51A has a half-glazed door set in a similar timber doorcase, along with a similar bowed shop display window. All ground floor sashes have 6/6 glazing bars and gauged skewback arches, while the first floor sashes have flush frames and 6/6 glazing bars. The building is topped with a dentilled eaves cornice and a gabled roof that includes two dormers: one hipped with a 2/2 unhorned sash and the other flat-topped with a 2-light casement.
Inside No.49, there is a chamfered spine beam with jewel stops.
