Description

Sutherland House is a house that has been converted into a restaurant. It dates from the mid-15th century and was remodeled in brick in the early 19th century. The building has a timber frame that is encased in rendered and color-washed brick, topped with a black-glazed pantile roof featuring a rebuilt central ridge stack.

The exterior is two stories high with a three-window front. On the ground floor, there are two six-panelled doors set within plain doorcases that have consoles beneath flat hoods; the door on the right is half-glazed. To the left of the ground floor, there are two 6/6 unhorned sash windows in flush frames, and directly above them, there are two similar sash windows. The right bay of the elevation features one unhorned tripartite sash window on each floor, with glazing bars arranged in a pattern of 2/2, 6/6, and 2/2.

Although the interior was not inspected, it is known to contain early 16th-century mullioned windows that were recovered during restoration work in the 1960s. One room on the ground floor and one on the first floor feature plaster cornices decorated with grape and vine motifs. The plaster ceilings showcase a variety of motifs, including fleur-de-lys, sea-horses, roses, and Greek honeysuckle ornamentation. These ceilings are likely from 1672 and were inserted during the stay of the Duke of York, who later became James II, while he was Admiral of the Fleet at the time of the Battle of Sole Bay.
