Description
Montague House and its front railings form a mid-18th century dwelling, later divided into two separate homes. It is located on the north-east side of the High Street in Southwold. The building is constructed of red brick, with a hipped roof covered in black-glazed pantiles, featuring two brick ridge stacks. The attached railings and gate are of wrought-iron.
The front elevation is of two storeys and three windows. Number 36 has a central four-panelled door set within a fluted doorcase, surmounted by a simple entablature and hood. A Venetian window sits to the left of the door, featuring 2/2 and 6/6 sash windows set beneath a gauged brick arch. To the right of the door is a single 8/8 horned sash window, also beneath a gauged skewback arch. The first floor has a tripartite sash window to the left with 2/2, 6/6, and 2/2 glazing bars, and two 8/8 horned sashes to the right. A dentil eaves cornice runs along the top of the front elevation.
The left-hand return displays an entrance to number 34 within a 20th-century glazed porch. The first floor has two 8/8 sash windows. A taller two-storey block to the left has eight-pane unhorned sashes. The interior of the building was not inspected during the listing process.
The subsidiary wrought-iron railings and gate are characterised by circular section bars.
