Description

Burton Hall is a fine house dating from around 1750, featuring a stylish facade. Constructed of brick with stone dressings and a tiled roof, the building has a slightly projecting center with a pediment. It includes a plain parapet, a modillion cornice, rusticated quoins, and brick stacks. There is a stone band between the ground and first floors. The house has three storeys and a five-window facade. Above the doorway is a pedimented window flanked by smaller unbarred sash windows, while all other windows are barred sashes. A stone balustrade is positioned below the pedimented window, and the center second-floor window features a moulded stone architrave. At the north end, there is a former orangery, which is a single-storey structure with five round-arched windows.

Inside, the staircase has three balusters on each step and an arch across the stairs. There is a second dog-leg staircase with two plain balusters on each step and turned newel posts. Several rooms contain cornices and 18th-century fireplaces, one of which has a bolection moulded, shouldered architrave. The property also includes some six-panelled doors.

Burton Hall forms a group with the wall and piers at Burton Hall, the adjacent milestone, and Burton Hall Lodge, with No 159 and Burton Hall Lodge being of local interest.
