Description

SALISBURY ROAD 1. BURTON 5187 Burton Hall (formerly listed in the Rural District of Ringwood and Fordingbridge) SZ 19 NE 9/364 30.9.64.

II* GV

  1. Circa 1750. A fine house with stylish facade. Brick with stone dressings and tiled roof. The centre breaks slightly forward and has pediment. Plain parapet and modillion cornice, rusticated quoins and brick stacks. Stone band between ground and lst floors. 3 storeys. 5 window facade. Above doorway is pedimented window flanked by smaller windows (those 3, unbarred sashes) all other windows barred sashes. Stone balustrade below pedimented window. Centre 2nd floor window has moulded stone architrave. Former orangery at north end single storey with 5 round arched windows. Inside. Staircase with 3 balusters on each step. Arch across stairs. A second, dog leg staircase with 2 plain balusters on each step and turned newel posts, Cornices in several rooms and several C18 fireplaces 1 with bolection moulded, shouldered architrave. Some 6 panelled doors.

No 159 forms a group with the wall and piers at Burton Hall, Burton Hall, the adjacent milestone and Burton Hall Lodge. No 159 and Burton Hall Lodge are of local interest.
