Description

Crescent House is a house built around 1620-1640, featuring an early 18th-century facade. The building is constructed of red brick with lighter bricks that are tuck-pointed on the 18th-century facade. It has a parapetted roof made of slate, adorned with a moulded modillion cornice. The house has two ridge stacks, one with two shafts and the other with four shafts, both set diagonally. Originally, the house had a plan of two parallel linked ranges with gable ends facing the road. It stands three storeys tall, with stone sills and gauged brick arches above five recessed hung sash windows, each with twelve panes. The third-storey windows are smaller, featuring only six panes, and three of the windows are blind. The central doorway is framed by a doorcase with engaged Ionic columns and a pulvinated frieze that is carved with a Greek garland motif. The door and its reveals have raised and fielded panels.

At the rear, one gable end has an original label above an attic window, and a similar larger label above a blocked first-floor window, both made of cut brick with return stops. Inside, one first-floor room is lined with bolection moulded and raised and fielded panelling in two heights, complete with a moulded cornice and dado. There is a bolection moulded fireplace surround, and another ground-floor room is also panelled. A fine closed-string staircase from around 1640 features five flights, with turned balusters and a moulded rail supported by square newel posts. One first-floor room has ovolo moulding on a cross-frame casement, which is now blocked.
