Description
The Cottages, located east of Lloyds Bank in Upwell, are part of the front range of a medieval building, likely in a U-plan configuration. This structure may have served as a lodging or guest house associated with one of the sixteen religious houses established in the Upwell area. Currently, it functions as two cottages. The exterior is made of coursed Barnack stone ashlar, with only slight disturbances to the front wall, while the rear wall has some brick repairs and partial rebuilding in brick on the left-hand gable end. The building was likely reduced in height in the 19th century when a pantiled roof and ridge stacks were added, and it now stands at two storeys high on a splayed plinth.
The front features an ogee-headed arch that once served as a central doorway, which is now blocked. This doorway is flanked by attached chamfered shafts on octagonal bases, with the upper edges splayed. The shafts have been cut down, and the one on the north side is set back at eaves height. Above the doorway, there is a splayed string-course. The left-hand gable end includes another original doorway, with one side of the jamb chamfered. Inside, all the details date from the 19th century.
