Description
Burfield Hall is a house dating from circa 1730, with an enlargement in the late 18th century, likely 1789. It is constructed of brick with plain tile roofs. The main block comprises five bays by two, arranged over two storeys and a dormer attic. The central three bays of the east facade project forward beneath a pediment. A central panelled door is topped by a pedimented hood and a plain overlight. The windows are sash windows with replaced late 19th-century glazing bars, all set under gauged skewback arches. The roof is hipped, featuring two gabled dormers with casements. A pair of symmetrically placed ridge stacks are present. The returns have two window bays each. A later 18th-century wing is set back to the west, built upon a 17th-century plinth indicating an earlier wing. This wing has two storeys and a dormer attic, with tripartite and single sashes to the east face. The south gable is stepped, incorporating an arched Gothic window in the gable head. The rear elevation reuses early 18th-century sash windows with glazing bars. A large ridge stack is located to the south of the centre.
The interior’s main door opens into a hall with an egg and dart cornice and a 20th-century stone chimney-piece. A room to the south has a 20th-century fireplace and an acanthus cornice, while the room to the north features plank panelling. The staircase, situated to the north-west, has an inserted oriel window. The balustrade consists of three turned and column balusters per tread, with a moulded ramped and wreathed handrail and dado panelling. A first-floor room to the north-east reuses mid-17th-century small-frame panelling. A main room contains a pediment over a panelled door. The roofs are of the staggered butt purlin type.
