Description

No. 34 on Hill Street, also known as Puddy's Corner, is a house and shop built in the early to mid-19th century, featuring a 1930s shop front. The building is rendered, likely over brick, with Flemish bond brickwork at the rear. The roof has been remodeled in the 20th century. It has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys tall, with a two-window range on the front and a three-window return on the right side. The corner site includes a 20th-century first-floor cill band and a moulded cornice at the parapet. The shop front is notable for its two-sided Art Deco style, made of glass and vitrolite with chrome details, a black plinth, and fascia, along with two island display cases and an inner entrance. The Hill Street front features a wide mid-20th-century first-floor window with thin mullions and square second-floor windows, while the right-hand return has a three-window range with a blind right-hand window and a central window. At the rear, there is a right-hand window with a flat brick arch, likely where loading doors once were, and a single-storey outshut that is not of special interest. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is noted to have some Art Deco decoration and a 19th-century stick baluster stair leading from the first floor upwards. The building is particularly significant for its rare surviving Art Deco shop front.
