Description

Durley Court Hotel and Washington Hotel are two nearly identical Italianate stucco villas built around 1850-1860. They are asymmetrical, standing three storeys high with a basement. The north and east gables feature open pediments, with the north gable having a lunette above an arched window over the entrance door. The east gable includes an arched window above a tripartite window, which is over a projecting square bay topped with a pseudo-leaded roof and a window of five arched lights. The north-west corner showcases a two-storey canted bay with shouldered lintels above segment-headed windows. The south-west corner has a rectangular bay with pairs of arched windows on each floor set diagonally. The chimneys are grouped in fours, with slits between them, and they support a cornice with a tall base of stack featuring an arched window. The Washington Hotel has a flat-roofed modern extension in the north-east angle, while Durley Court Hotel retains a good original conservatory with arched lights in that position. Durley Court has lost most of its chimneys, retaining only two made of buff brick. Together, No 3 (Washington Hotel) and No 5 (Durley Court Hotel) form a significant group.
