Description
The Branksome Arms is a public house built around 1905, showcasing a blend of Art Nouveau and Edwardian Baroque styles. The exterior features green glazed brick or tile and pale cream faience, with a roof that is not visible from the street. The building stands three storeys high and has four windows. The outer bays are slightly projected above the main fascia and are topped with a semi-circular pediment, while the center two bays feature a sinuous segmental pediment. The windows are primarily plate glass sash, with the first-floor center pair being arched and consisting of three lights plus a transom.
The quoins and window surrounds are highlighted in faience, and the building includes a modillion cornice along with decorative panels on the pediments, swags, and cill bands, all faienced. The ground floor retains original joinery, including a pair of part-glazed doors on the left, a single similar door under the second bay, and a corner entry with segmental plate glass bows flanking a glazed door. Above the transom, there are glazing bars leading to square panes or segmental arches. A cellar door is located on the left, and a through-way is on the right. The full-width fascia features mid-20th century lettering on Ionic square pilasters, while original faience lettering reading 'Branksome Arms' is displayed on the central pediment. Although the interior has not been inspected, it appears that the main bar has been restyled in a plastic veneer style. The facade is a striking example of its period.
