Description
39 Poole Hill is a dignified, ashlar-faced commercial building, dating from around 1900. It stands two storeys high with dormers and features a façade that is only four windows wide, showcasing oversized yet sensitive detailing. Fluted pilasters are positioned between the ground floor windows and the off-centre doorway, supporting a deep entablature and cornice, which is topped with a panelled parapet-frieze. Similar, unfluted pilasters are found between the first floor windows, supporting another deep entablature adorned with triglyphs on the frieze and a far-projecting cornice. The white-painted dormers, which have triangular pediments, are set against a greenish slate mansard roof and are connected by a thick cornice along the top of the roof. The elaborate ground floor business hall features marble columns, chimneypieces, and high panelling, having been modernised in 1973-1974. This building is part of a group that includes the Pembroke Hotel and other properties along Poole Hill and Commercial Road.
