Description
The Pembroke Hotel is a well-preserved and sizable Italianate hotel built around 1850. It stands three storeys tall and is constructed of stucco, painted white with black dressings. The building features a symmetrical convex curve, with the main block consisting of seven windows, flanked by wings that have three and four windows each. Each bay of the wings and the central bay of the main block is highlighted by giant rusticated pilaster strips.
The central bay includes a tripartite entrance divided by pilasters, with two tripartite windows above, also divided, topped with a triangular pediment. The other windows in the main block are plain sashes across all three floors, except for the shop windows to the right of the entrance, which feature coupled consoles on the fascia. There is a frieze at the ground floor and cornices on the first and second floors. A straight parapet rises above the pilaster strips, leading to raised sections with balls on top, and over the central bay, there is a semi-circular pedimental feature. The wings have bar windows and shop windows below, with a blocking course on top that is shallower than the central parapet.
The Pembroke Hotel, along with Nos 1 to 17 (odd) and Nos 25 to 31 (odd) on Poole Hill, forms a group with Nos 39 to 45 (odd) and Nos 2 to 34 (even) on Poole Hill, as well as Nos 166 to 196 (even) on Commercial Road.
