Description

The Angel Hotel, located at 107 High Street, is an early 19th-century building with a stuccoed facade featuring a cornice and a coped parapet. It stands two storeys tall and has two windows with sashes that include late 19th-century glazing. The ground floor has a shop front beneath a heavy cornice, with a six-light canted bay window that has splayed arched panes, although only the vertical glazing bars remain. There are blocked doors present as well.

Behind the facade, some timber framing can be seen, and the two eastern bays, originally part of number 109, are made of painted brick. The main building consists of six bays and has a mansard slate roof with four dormers. It features six windows with sashes and glazing bars set in moulded architraves on the first floor, along with French casements that open onto a continuous cast iron balcony with a hood.

The entrance includes a wide doorway flanked by Doric pilasters and topped with a projecting cornice. There are two additional doorways to the east, which are supported by engaged Ionic columns. A carriageway arch runs through the ground floor, with ceiling beams visible overhead. Inside, there is an early 19th-century spiral iron staircase, and some interior beams are exposed in the walls and ceiling. The western part of the hotel was formerly used as Assembly Rooms and features decorative interior elements.

Numbers 105 to 109 on High Street are part of a group.
