Description
St Michaels, located at No 57 Upper Bognor Road, is an early 19th-century building that stands three storeys high with a basement and features twelve windows. The exterior is stuccoed, with the three eastern window bays cemented, likely added later. It has an eaves cornice and retains its glazing bars. The building consists of two bays of three windows each on all floors, topped with hipped slate roofs.
At the front, there is a large porch accessed by six steps with a handrail. The porch is supported by Doric columns and features a triglyph frieze and an iron balcony above. It is glazed and includes a flat segmental fanlight and two doorways, each with semi-circular fanlights. The eastern wing, which has the cemented front, includes a curved bay of three windows on the ground floor, topped with a cornice and parapet. Connecting this bay to the easternmost of the pair of bays is a large curved bay containing eight lights, with fluted pilasters between the lights and an iron balcony above, similar to that over the porch. Although this bay is an addition, it appears to be contemporary with the original structure. There are modern wings to the southeast and rear of the building.
St Michaels is part of a group with Nos 41 to 57 (odd), No 55A, and Nos 65 to 71 (odd), along with all the surrounding walls.
