Description
Mordington is an early 19th-century house located on Upper Bognor Road. It has three storeys and a basement, featuring eight windows and a stuccoed stone color. The building has an eaves cornice and is arranged in two bays of three windows each on all floors, topped with hipped slate roofs. Notably, all the glazing bars are missing. While the house itself may seem rather plain, it is significant for its portico, which is accessed by five steps and supported by four Doric columns. The portico has a triglyph frieze and a pediment above the center. The main door consists of six moulded panels, with the top four being glazed, and it is topped by a semi-circular fanlight. Flanking this door are two similar doorways, each with their own semi-circular fanlight.
The east front features a small verandah, also up five steps, which has a dentilled cornice and a pediment above the center. This side includes a triple door similar to the front portico's door but lacks fanlights and is glazed, with one light engraved with Grecian ornament. Inside, the vestibule is marked by two Corinthian columns aligned with the center of the middle door, and it has a pair of very shallow elliptical arches across the rear. Mordington is part of a group with Nos 41 to 57 (odd), No 55A, and Nos 65 to 71 (odd), along with all the walls surrounding them.
