Description

Northcliffe, originally three large houses built around 1787 and known as Spencer Terrace, is now a halls of residence. The building is three storeys high with a semi-basement and has 14 windows. It is constructed of red brick with a painted brick or rubble plinth. A single cemented pilaster in the centre has been removed since the last survey. The building features a modillion eaves cornice, although the glazing bars have been lost. There are two porches, leading up seven steps with a handrail, thin Doric columns, an enriched entablature, a semi-circular fanlight, and six-panel moulded doors. Basement doors are located beneath the steps. The porch to the easternmost house has been removed. Passages run beneath either extremity of the terrace. Northcliffe forms a group with numbers 41 to 57 (odd), 55A, and numbers 65 to 71 (odd), as well as the surrounding walls.
