Description

Number 1 on Salisbury Road is a building dating from the 16th or 17th century, with later alterations and additions. The front facade is now roughcast, while the rear, or northern facade, features some exposed square panel framing with red brick infilling. The rest of the rear wall is made of red brick with some grey headers. The building has an irregular outline with one and a half to two storeys. It includes three windows, which are a mix of sashes and late 18th to early 19th century casements with glazing bars. There is an off-centre gabled porch, and the central bay is advanced, while the southern bay is lower with a half hipped gable end. A very large off-centre chimney is also present, and the roof is covered with modern pantiles. Number 1, Staplecross Farmhouse, and the adjacent milestone form a group with Hawthorn Cottage, which is a building of local interest located on Hawthorn Road.
