Description
Number 23 on Nethergate Street is a 17th-century house that features a timber frame and plaster exterior. It underwent significant alterations in the early 19th century when it was refronted. The building has two storeys, while the north-east end, which is one storey with attics, appears to have originally been a separate medieval house and now serves as part of No 23, functioning as a garage on the ground floor.
The façade has three windows, with two three-light bays flanking the entrance door. The windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars set in cased frames. The entrance features a central six-panel door beneath a wood Doric portico, which has fluted columns, a triglyph frieze, and a cornice. At the south-west end, there is a carriage entrance. The roof is slate, while the building at the north-east end has a 20th-century tiled roof with one sloping roofed dormer. It also boasts a notable red brick Tudor chimney stack with two octagonal shafts, which have moulded bases and small horse's head ornamentation at the base.
This building is part of a group that includes No 11, Nos 13 to 15, Nos 17, 18, the Rose and Crown Public House, Nos 20, 22, Orchard House, and Nos 23 to 26 on the south-east side.
