Description

Charlton House is a detached villa, originally two separate homes, built in the mid-19th century. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a slate roof. The building has a compact shape with a low-pitched roof and wide eaves, and it includes a single bay pavilion-like extension on each side, set well back from the main structure.

The exterior is two storeys high with three windows, featuring four-pane sash windows on wide sills that extend beyond the openings and are supported by brackets. The ashlar porch has reeded pilasters, an entablature, and a blocking course with a parapet above a panelled door. Each wing contains one sash window on each floor, and the right side of the front range has a sash window on each floor, along with an additional inserted window at ground level. There are two square ashlar stacks at each end of the building, with another stack located on the pavilion that is set back.

The interior has not been fully inspected, but a partial inspection of No. 153 in 1976 by Bath Council revealed that the first-floor ceilings had suffered significant damage due to prolonged neglect from a leaking roof and required replacement. Charlton House is part of a series of villas along the north side of Church Road, which enjoy panoramic views of the countryside to the south.
