Description
Combe Lodge is a detached villa built in the early to mid 19th century. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a slate roof. The building has a compact block shape with a hipped roof behind parapets. It stands two storeys tall with a basement and has a window arrangement of three plus one, with the end bay on the right possibly added later and slightly set back from the main front.
All windows are plain sashes and are fitted with louvred shutters. The original range is highlighted by a square ashlar porch that has reeded pilasters and a frieze, along with a moulded cornice and blocking. The basement windows are barely visible at ground level and are set within small areas enclosed by dwarf ashlar walls topped with cast iron crestings. The left side of the parapet returns to the front and features a small horizontal elliptical bull's-eye light near the front, as well as a full-height canted bay with sashes at the rear, which also includes French doors leading down three steps. The right return has a sash window on the first floor. There are two chimney stacks on each gable end and two at the rear.
The interior has not been inspected. Combe Lodge is one of a series of villas located on the north side of Church Road, offering fine panoramic views to the south. It is noted as one of the earliest houses of status built in this area, which was previously dominated by workers from the local quarrying industry.
