Description

Hope Cote Lodge is an early 19th-century detached house, with later 19th-century alterations to the roof. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate and lead roof.

The house is a compact, two-storey and attic block with six windows, all plain sash windows set within chamfered openings. Segmental-headed dormers light the attic space, the fourth one featuring a double sash window. Double sash windows are also found at the first and ground floor levels. Delicate bowed balcony railings are fitted to the first-floor windows. A panelled front door, featuring a radial fanlight, is centrally positioned within the third bay.

The left return displays a two-storey canted sash bay, topped with a cornice and blocking featuring an inverted segmental parapet with ball finials. The right return incorporates a dormer window and a large canted sash bay. Ground-floor windows on this return have rounded top corners and a conical slate roof behind a parapet. Various stacks are present.

The interior has not been inspected. Hope Cote Lodge is one of a series of villas located on the north side of Church Road, offering fine panoramic views to the south. Originally similar in appearance to the other villas in the street, it has undergone extension and significant modifications, particularly to the roof.
