Description
The piers, gate, and railings to The Old Vicarage date from around 1840 and are likely designed by H.E. Goodridge. They are made of limestone ashlar and cast iron. The structure runs the full width of the Vicarage site along Church Road and consists of eight square stone piers with panels of railing in between. Each pier sits on a simple base and features incised panels on all four sides, a stepped frieze, and cornice moulding, topped with cross-gabled capping resembling low Greek pediments.
At the left end, the first pair of piers has a wide opening that once held gates, while towards the right end, there is a small cast iron gate between the piers. The railings terminate at the last pier of the churchyard wall. Between the piers, there is a low ashlar curb with a rounded top, topped with continuous spear-head railings, a top rail, and a central standard with an urn finial. The railings and piers originally extended further to the left, but a new dwelling has cut off part of the Vicarage garden, leaving some piers but no railings in that section. Overall, the railings and piers are an important visual and historical feature associated with the Vicarage, extending approximately 65 meters.
