Description

Claremont House is a detached house dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar, with a roof hidden behind parapets. The house is a compact block, originally two storeys high, but later raised to three, with a symmetrical three-window front. It features twelve-pane sash windows. A square ashlar porch with panelled pilasters, an entablature with a blocking course and ball finials is centrally located. A moulded string runs above the first floor level, and a sill band is present at the level of the former parapet. A cornice and blocking course sits above the second floor, topped with an early cast iron geometric balustrade which returns at the ends. The left flank has a twelve-pane sash above a panelled door within deep reveals, with two smaller lights to the left, and a lower block with a parapet. Ashlar stacks rise from each gable, and a deep stack is present on the rear range. The right return is plain. A single-story range, built later and matching the parapet height, is attached to the right. The interior of the house has not been inspected. A boundary wall, approximately 1.5 metres high and with a rounded coping, extends from the front at the left. A section of simple railing sweeps to the facade and returns as a dwarf wall to a pair of octagonal gatepiers with pyramidal cappings. The dwarf wall continues across the full width of the site. The house is the first in a series of villas along the north side of Church Road and offers fine views over the countryside to the south.
