Description
The gate piers, gates, and boundary walls to Ashlands were built around 1850 and are made of ashlar, dressed stone, and cast iron. They are located at the corner of Belmont Road, near Combe Down Junior School. The structure features a pair of ashlar piers that stand approximately 2.5 meters high, each with double sunk arched panels, moulded capping, and blocking with a hollow mould top. Between the piers are early cast iron gates. On either side of the gates, the boundary walls are constructed from large square blocks with plain stone coping, sweeping up to the piers. The left wall curves away across the full width of the site, just below the school building, while the right wall curves to follow a steeply dropping footpath and returns across the full width of the site at the bottom, on the south side. These piers and walls serve as an important visual feature for the free-standing villa.
