Description

Glenburnie is a detached villa, now serving as a Junior School, built in the mid-19th century with 20th-century additions. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a slate roof. It has a tall, compact design with a low-pitched hipped roof that has deep eaves supported by widely spaced single brackets. At the rear, there is a large later 20th-century extension.

The exterior consists of three storeys and three windows, with plain sashes set in architrave surrounds and cornices on the first floor. The ground floor features French windows with Venetian shutters, along with a central glazed and panelled door that has a transom light above it. A notable feature is the full-width cast iron balcony on the first floor, which has decorative railings with grape and vine-leaf designs, supported by cast iron brackets in seven bays. The eaves have a plain frieze band, and there are cropped ashlar stacks at each end of the building.

The right side of the villa has a plain appearance, with a sash window on each floor, including a twelve-pane window on the second floor at the rear. The left side is similar but lacks a window on the second floor, featuring a twelve-pane window on the first floor instead.

The interior has been substantially altered to accommodate pre-prep school facilities and has been considerably extended. Historically, Glenburnie is the last and most imposing villa in a series along the north side of Church Road, offering panoramic views over the countryside to the south.
