Description
Nos 1 and 2 Park Place, known as Park House and Arclane, are a pair of houses located on The Avenue in Combe Down. They were built in the early 19th century and have some 20th-century additions. The houses are constructed from limestone ashlar, with No. 2 being painted. The roofs are either slate or double Roman tiles.
Both houses have a wide frontage and are double-depth with a central valley. They are two storeys high, each featuring two windows, primarily four-pane sashes. No. 1 has two windows on each floor, with a plain design on the ground floor. It also has a central pair of glazed doors set in a square ashlar porch, which includes panelled pilasters, a frieze, cornice, and a blocking course. To the right, there are two plain coped gables with stacks leading to The Firs, and the rear has various sash windows along with a 20th-century extension.
No. 2 also has two windows at each level and a central part-glazed panelled door framed by plain pilasters, topped with a slab hood that has a reeded edge on brackets. The rear features various sash windows as well. The front of both houses includes a first-floor sill band, cornice, blocking course, and parapet, along with two large central stacks and two additional stacks at the gable ends. The front is also marked by pyramid-capped gate piers with dwarf walls. The interior has not been inspected.
