Description
The National Westminster Bank, formerly known as The Avenue, is a bank building located on Church Road in Combe Down, dating from around 1860 with 20th-century additions. It is constructed of limestone ashlar, with the roof not visible behind the parapets. The building features a consistent neo-Georgian style.
The exterior is three storeys high with three windows, all of which are twelve-pane sashes. The first floor windows have cornices supported by carved consoles. The ground floor has a central light with shallow flanking panels and a radial lunette above. A door has been inserted into a former window opening at the left end of the ground floor. The building includes a plinth, a first floor sill band, a cornice, and a blocking, with a central raised panel inscribed with the word "BANK" in raised characters.
On the left side, which faces The Avenue, there is a plain flank that has a small sash window with a cornice on brackets above a former doorway that is now blocked. The coped gable features a deep ashlar stack with a fluted frieze. The rear wall also has sash windows and includes 20th-century additions. The interior has not been inspected.
