Description
Number 2 Avenue Place is a shop with accommodation above, dating from the mid-19th century, which is an extension to an existing 18th-century house (number 3). The building is rendered, likely over brick, and has a Welsh slate roof. It features a narrow single-depth plan that projects forward towards the road from number 3.
The exterior is two storeys high with one window. The ground floor has a small modern shop front with timber mullions, a plain fascia, a stallriser, and a modern plastic blind. Above, there are two mid-19th century four-pane sash windows. The roof is hipped at the front.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, Avenue Place was one of the earliest developments in Combe Down, with origins dating back to the mid-18th century, as it is depicted in a drawing from 1759. This shop was previously known as the Carriage Inn, named after the stone-bearing wagons that were used in the local quarries.
