Description

No. 54 Sydney Buildings is a detached villa built around 1825. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and has a slate roof. The building has a double depth compact plan and is set on a steep site.

The exterior features two storeys at the front and a full three storeys at the rear, with a two-bay front. The ground floor has an arcade with two recessed blind arches, while a plat band runs along the first floor, topped by a cornice and parapet on the second. The left bay contains a panelled door with a plain transom light in a beaded surround. There are six-over-six pane sash windows, and to the right, a glazed laylight leads to the basement. Each end of the building has an ashlar stack. The left return features a twelve-pane sash window on the top floor and two small square lights. The rear also has a cornice and parapet, with two six-over-six pane sash windows at each level, including sunk panels on the middle floor and a sill band on the first floor.

The interior has not been inspected. This villa is the most southerly in a long line of villas and terrace dwellings along this road. The previous listing mistakenly dated it to 1928, likely a misprint for 1828. A design closely resembling this elevation was submitted for approval to the Bathwick Estate Office in 1825.
