Description

Nos. 49 and 50 form a semi-detached pair of houses, dating from around 1825. They are constructed of limestone ashlar with slate roofs and set on a sloping site. The houses have a symmetrical double-depth plan. The front elevation is five bays wide, with two windows per floor in each house, and blind windows at the shared party wall. At ground floor level is an arcade of shallow recessed arches set below a plat band, topped by a cornice and a parapet. Coped gables and large central ashlar stacks are also present. The front doors are panelled and have deep painted-in transom lights. No. 49 has twelve-pane sash windows and a basement grille, while No. 50 has plain plate glass sashes, with larger sixteen-pane sashes in the basement. A lower, set-back bay has been added to the left of No. 50, featuring 20th-century eight-pane windows on each level. To the rear of No. 49 is a full-height canted bay with a plain sash window, plus a further sash window to the right with a sunk panel at mid-floor and a small oculus to the left. The rear of No. 50 has large twelve-pane sashes on each level, with horizontal louvred shutters to the top floor and a small oculus to the right. The interiors were not inspected. Original spike railings are located across the front, set on a small stone curb with rounded tops, returning at the ends and with a central stone pier with capping. The boundary to No. 49 continues with an ashlar wall extending approximately 3 metres, including a plank gate. A design similar to this facade was submitted for approval to the Bathwick Estate Office in 1825.
