Description

Abbey View Lock is a canal lock built around 1800 and restored in 1971, designed by engineer John Rennie. It features a brick-lined basin with the top two courses made of stone, finished with heavy rounded flush coping. The lock has two pairs of timber gates and cast iron winch gear located at the upper end. The walls at the upper end are splayed out for approximately 8 meters, while at the lower end, they extend to and through the adjacent bridge. The Kennet and Avon Canal was fully opened in 1810.
