Description

No. 20 is a detached villa built in the early 19th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and features a slate roof with moulded stacks at the high coped gable ends. The villa is square, two storeys high, with an attic storey and a basement. The principal elevations have a symmetrical three-window arrangement, while a single window range to the west, likely added later, projects to the north side. The central windows have shallow segmental arched recesses, and the central first-floor openings feature balconies with cast iron railings on scroll brackets. The first floor has six/six-pane sash windows, with the left window on the street elevation being blind. A continuous plat-band runs along the building, and the cornice over the first floor has a stepped frieze and a band above, adorned with smoothly curved acroteria carved into the attic quoins. The substantial attic storey has three/three-pane sash windows at eaves level on the north and south fronts, and the returns have three-window arrangements with margin paned casements in the attic. The left wing of the villa is three-storey and slightly lower, featuring windows set in segmental arched recesses at the front and rear, with an attic window cutting through the cornice. The interior has not been inspected. The garden is enclosed by a coped rubblestone wall approximately 3 meters high, extending 20 meters along the north front and 50 meters along Sion Hill to the east. At the top of the hill, there is a six-panel door with freestone jambs and a lintel, topped with a plain simple pediment flanked by plain acroteria.
