Description

Hampton Lodge is a house dating from approximately 1805, with alterations made in the 20th century. The north front, facing the street, is a two-window, three-storey elevation finished in rough limestone ashlar. It has a six-panel door with an overlight and cornice, and a C20 garage door to the right. The south garden front is more elaborate, with a three-window design and plate glass sash windows. Balconettes are present on the first and second floors. A cast iron trellised balcony with a swept canopy is positioned on the first floor. The ground floor features plate glass sash windows, and a single-storey porch with a returned cornice and shaped brackets sits to the left. The right return has a blind first-floor window with a raised eared-and-shouldered surround and floating cornice. The interior was not inspected, but a 1992 survey by the Bath Preservation Trust found original plaster ceilings, chimneypieces, and a wooden stair with a mahogany handrail, along with a dining room addition from around 1880. An approximately 3-metre-high and 15-metre-long ashlar wall extends from the right return, running to a canted corner and downhill for a further 5 metres. A gateway in the centre of the wall features a simple plain pediment and acroteria. The building has group value, contributing to the character of the Sion Hill area.
