Description

A pair of houses built in the mid-19th century, with alterations in the 20th century. The houses are located on the south side of North Road, in Combe Down/Williamstowe. Number 154 is a two-storey, three-window house with a double pitched roof and external stacks. It features twelve-pane sash windows to the first floor, plain windows below, and an early 20th-century door with Art Nouveau glazing and a glazed canopy positioned slightly to the right. A deep mid-platband is present, and the stacks to the left have been raised to a higher gable. Number 156 is a house that has been raised, and is two storeys and an attic with a steep slated mansard roof returning to the left. It has sashes at each level and platbands. To the left of Number 156, set back, is a four-storey square tower with a four-pane sash and a flat-roofed porch brought forward, incorporating a 19th-century door with a transom light, deep reveals, and a glazed canopy. The right gable of Number 156 is plain, and the right half has box eaves with a gutter mould. The tower features a cornice and blocking course. The masonry has straight joints, but the ashlar coursing is the same, and the platband continues to Number 156. The interiors have not been inspected.
