Description

The Horseshoe Public House is an early to mid-19th century public house located on North Road, Combe Down/Williamstowe. It is a parallel range property with a double gable to the right, facing Tyning Road.

The front range, facing the road and painted, has a pantile roof and two storeys with two windows. These are twelve-pane sash windows, with a sill band at first floor level. A central square porch features concrete block cheeks below a flat entablature with a cornice and blocking course. The gables have coped verges with ashlar stacks. A four-pane sash window is visible in a blocked former doorway on the return to the right. A rear range with a slate roof also has four-pane sashes at each level. A long, single-storey service block runs along Tyning Road, returning to its junction with Gladstone Road, forming an important visual boundary to the street.

The interior was significantly altered and opened out in the 1980s. A skittle alley to the rear was created from former stables and a smithery. The public house is located at the west end of a long row of buildings, contributing to the townscape along North Road, opposite a high boundary wall to Prior Park.
