Description

The gatepiers and boundary walls to No. 32 on Oldfield Road date from around 1840 and are constructed of ashlar. There are two pairs of slender square piers, one pair opposite the main entrance to Oldfield Villa and a higher pair to the right. The bases of the piers are partly concealed by later paving. Each pier features incised panels on the front and has heavy moulded cappings topped with pyramids that carry rounded terminal blocks. The pier on the extreme right is inscribed with "MOUNT ROSE" and is adjacent to No. 32, indicating that it was originally built as part of No. 32. Between the piers, and to the left, there is a well-crafted ashlar wall made of deep blocks, with coping that sweeps up to the piers. The wall has ashlar courses and coping that slope slightly to follow the fall of the road and returns to both sides of the site. These structures are important contemporary features of the villa, although they no longer have their original gates.
