Description

36 and 37 Oldfield Road are semi-detached houses that originally served as cottages or a barn, dating back to the 18th century but modified in the late 19th century. They are constructed from squared and coursed rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, some timber framing, and have pantile roofs. The houses have a single depth long range, with their main entrances and frontages facing away from the road.

The exterior features two storeys and four windows, with two-light casements that have flush stone mullions and diagonal leading. The entrance front includes two pairs of half-dormers with framed gables above the two-light windows. At the right end of No.37, there is a blocked wide elliptical opening, and a deep single-storey gabled entrance wing projects from this house. The return on Bloomfield Avenue is jettied, with the gable and upper floor framed and plastered panels. A projecting gable with a deep overhang on brackets covers an oriel window with a 1:3:1-light arrangement, set on a moulded bressumer supported by stone brackets, which oversails a stone ground floor featuring a stone ovolo-mould four-light mullion and transom casement. The far gable is coped with a saddle stone and includes two small pigeon openings.

The rear, or road front, has three gablets with two-light casements and some smaller lights. No.36 has a blocked former doorway. The party division is coped and has a square base supporting three decorative yellow clay 'Tudor' pots, with a similar base featuring pots at the ridge of No.37. The interiors have not been inspected. This building is a notable survival from earlier development in the area and is of interest for its 19th-century details.
