Description

Rock Hall is a detached villa built around 1840, located on the south side of Oldfield Road. It features a limestone ashlar exterior and a slate roof, with a low-pitched design and deep rafter eaves. The villa has a picturesque Italianate style and consists of two storeys. The front facade is four windows wide, primarily featuring plain sash windows. The first-floor windows include a margin pane in a plain surround, a small plain window under a pediment, and a margin pane with a segmental pediment in the central gable.

To the right, there is a two-storey octagonal bay with a pierced parapet and a large plain sash window. The ground floor displays a margin pane sash window set in pilasters with brackets supporting the cornice, a triple plain sash window in the gabled section, and three plain sash windows in the bay.

To the left of the centre, there are two arched bays; the first contains a narrow pair of six-panel doors leading to a plain fanlight, while the second is blind with a small inset arched light. Both bays feature moulded archivolts with keystones and an impost band. The building has quoin pilasters, a mid platband, and a large stack to the left with three smaller stacks to the right, all adorned with heavy modillion cornices and blockings.

The right side of the villa is plain, while the rear includes a gabled wing above a narrow canted bay, with haunched eaves similar to the front. A glazed verandah extends over large doors and a transom light, with a pyramid-glazed central section. The interior has not been inspected. Rock Hall is part of a series of varied villas from the same period along this road and has seen little external alteration.
