Description

Nos 27 and 28 Oldfield Road are a pair of three-storey buildings with a basement, designed in an elaborate Italianate style. They feature low pitched roofs, two prominent gables facing the street, and a long transverse gabled wing at the rear. The buildings are constructed of fine ashlar with concrete tile roofs.

The exterior includes originally sash windows set in raised plat surrounds, though these have all been replaced with plastic lights. The two front gables are of different heights, with the right section set back. Above the tall tripartite lights with delicate iron balustrades, there are paired arched windows that form a Palladian window, set above a pierced stone balcony supported by brackets. To the left, there is a turret with a pair of arched lights featuring keystones above a triple light with a central arched head. The ground floor features a pair of vertical panelled doors with very narrow sidelights, accessed by a flight of nosed steps enclosed by solid balustrades and terminal cylindrical piers.

To the left, there is a flat-roofed three-storey section and a lift shaft that rises above the other roof levels. On the right, a single-storey square porch contains a four-panel door with a transom light, framed by a moulded and eared architrave with a triple keystone, beneath a cornice and blocking course. Behind the porch, there is a two-stage stack on corbels, with a cornice at the first-floor level. The return of this block features various sash windows.

The buildings are characterized by bold square alternating quoins, plain raised pilasters on the top floor, and platbands. The deep eaves and gables are supported by brackets, and there is a stack with a heavy bracketed capping to the left of the left gable return. The west front, which faces Oldfield Lane, has a full-height gabled range at the rear that mirrors the detailing of the main front. This includes paired arched windows on the top floor and a pierced stone balustrade crowning a bay with large plain lights. A tenthood verandah supported by decorative cast-iron standards with a rich balustrade runs the full length of the long return wall, which also features single and paired sash windows.

The interior has not been inspected.
