Description
No. 21 and attached railings is a terrace house, dating from around 1775, and converted to flats in the 20th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar to the front, with rendered basement, and ashlar and rubble to the rear. The house has a mansard roof with double Roman tiles to the front and rear, and a coped party wall with two ashlar stacks, some of which retain early clay pots. A staircase is located to the rear.
The three-window front is three storeys high, with an attic and basement. The first floor has three two-over-two sash windows in splayed reveals with lowered stone sills, each with a floating cornice above. The central window is embellished with moulded console brackets and a pediment over a tablet bearing incised lettering "M c K". The second floor has three six-over-six sash windows in chamfered ovolo moulded architraves with stone sills. The ground floor has two plate glass horned sashes in splayed reveals and stone sills to the left, and an eight-panel door with fielded panels within an enriched pedimented Doric doorcase, approached by one step to a concrete-coated crossover. The basement contains a 20th-century window and glazed door. A double dormer features plate glass sashes. There is a band course over the ground floor, a fluted frieze, a modillion eaves cornice, and a coped parapet. The partially visible rear elevation has six-over-six sash windows to the first half-landing and first floor, with plate glass horned sashes above. The interior of the property has not been inspected. Attached wrought iron railings, with foliate heads on limestone bases, are present.
