Description
The Corner House, which includes H R Francis Hairdresser, is a house and shops dating from the 15th century, altered in the 18th century. It was originally one building with 'The Sanctuary' nearby. The structure is timber-framed and has been refronted; the High Street side features painted brick, while the south side is made of red brick with grey headers and some sandstone ashlar. The building has a half-hipped tiled roof and is arranged in three bays, built end on to the road. It stands two storeys high with attics and has two windows. A brick modillion eaves cornice runs along the top. The High Street elevation includes one tripartite sash window and one casement window, while the south elevation has two sash windows with 16 panes and one blank space. There are also two cambered windows and two cambered doors.
Inside, the building is said to contain two 15th-century crown post trusses that divide the three bays of the roof. The lower storey features heavy wide flat ceiling joists and part of a 17th-century dog leg staircase with a squat moulded baluster and a square newel post with a moulded knop. The first floor has 17th-century panelling with a carved diamond pattern, while the ground floor showcases painted plank and muntin panelling. The first floor also includes a chamfered spine beam with lamb's tongue stops.
