Description

A house and hairdressers shop dates from the mid-16th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building has a three-cell plan and is timber-framed, with roughcast panels and broad borders. Above the entrance is a cartouche bearing the date 1482; previously, until around 1980, this cartouche displayed the date 1716 and the initials C over R.M. The upper floor is jettied with supporting knees. The roof is tiled, with some crested ridge tiles, and features axial and end chimneys of red brick. Late 20th-century casement windows are present, with arched heads to the lights in number 137. Number 137A has a pair of late 20th-century shop windows and a glazed entrance door. Number 137 has a 19th-century four-panelled door at the cross-entry position. Inside the hall is a moulded bridging joist, and the twin service rooms to the right have exposed studwork. The roof is a plain crownpost roof with two-way bracing. A large chimney sits between the hall and parlour.
