Description
No. 131 on High Street is a Grade II listed building that was part of the District Council offices. It was built in the late 18th century as a house for S.A. Maw, a Quaker and banker. The building is constructed of red brick and features a hipped roof covered with concrete plain tiles. A wooden moulded and dentilled cornice masks the gutter, and there are external chimneys made of red brick.
The structure stands three storeys high and has five windows. The windows are sash style with flat arches made of orange gauged brick; some are original small-pane sashes, while others were renewed in the 19th century with larger panes. To the left of the entrance, there is a flat-roofed, one-storey bay from the 19th century that also has sash windows.
The original entrance is notable, approached by stone steps with wrought iron railings. It features a six-panelled door, with the lower panels fielded, set deeply within ogee-arched panelled reveals. Above the door is a fanlight with intersecting tracery. The entrance is further enhanced by a portico supported by Roman Doric columns and pilasters, featuring a broken entablature, triangular pediment, and a modillioned cornice.
