Description

Nos 17 and 18 High Street are a pair of purpose-built shops with living accommodation above, dating to 1871. A stone shield above the first-floor windows bears the date. The building is constructed of Ardingly Sandstone ashlar and Cuckfield stone, with the north side rendered and the west elevation in brick. It has a tiled roof. The design comprises two parallel ranges with a splayed corner to the south, extending to two or three storeys and originally featuring five windows. The range is almost symmetrical, with a central pair of gables topped with ornate bargeboards, pendants, and a finial. The first floor has five horned sash windows, each with six panes and a cambered head. The ground floor features two splayed bays and later shop fronts. The building is notable as a good example of a 19th-century purpose-built shop using local materials and is listed for its group value.
