Description

Ockenden House is a house that has several phases of construction, with a core that dates back to the 15th century. It likely started as an open hall, with a high projecting cross-wing from the 16th century on the right side and a 17th-century wing on the left, along with a 20th-century extension at the end of these wings. The building is timber-framed and has been refaced in roughcast, tile hanging, stucco, and red brick, with some exposed frame and plaster infill. It features a tiled roof and has two storeys with attics. The 15th-century core is roughcast and includes a gablet on the west side. The first floor has three 20th-century casement windows. On the ground floor, there is a 16-pane sash window in a moulded architrave, two canted bay windows, and a doorcase with a flat hood above a six-panelled door. The west wing is partly tile hung, revealing some square panel timber-framing with plaster infill, and has two casement windows. At the rear, there is an original diamond mullioned window, with a 20th-century addition that is not of special interest. The right-hand wing, likely from the 16th century, is positioned end-on to the road. The south elevation is stuccoed, the west elevation is red brick, and the east elevation retains box framing with plaster infill. A large clustered brick chimney stack is present, along with a carved wooden barge-board featuring pendants. The south elevation has two 12-pane sash windows with drip-moulds above and quoins, while the west elevation has two casement windows, with the ground floor windows having triple cambered heads. The east elevation includes one sash and one casement window. There is also a further brick wing at the rear that dates to 1869.
