Description

Cuckfield Church of England Primary School is a former grammar school that has been converted into a primary school. The building consists of two parts: the western section, which dates back to the late 16th century and was founded in 1510, and the eastern section, which is a 19th-century addition.

The western part is constructed from Ardingly sandstone ashlar and Cuckfield stone, topped with a Horsham stone slab roof. It has two storeys and attics, featuring six windows, including one modern dormer. The gable ends are adorned with kneelers that have carved diamond motifs and remnants of apex pinnacles. There are six casement windows, with three of them being stone mullioned and transomed. A moulded string-course runs above the ground floor, and there is a chamfered plinth. On the north side, there is a prominent chimney stack with two attached square brick shafts.

The eastern section is also made of sandstone and has a tiled roof. It consists of two storeys and attics with four windows, featuring gable ends and four trefoliated mullioned and transomed windows. This part includes a brick moulded string-course, an S-shaped iron tie, serrated patterned ridge tiles, and a brick tapering chimney stack with tumbling in.

Inside the 16th-century section, there is a stone fireplace on the first floor, and the ground floor bays are separated by moulded ceiling beams with channelled soffits and carved stops. The roof structure is of the Queen post type.
