Description
29 Court Barton is a former grammar school, now a dwelling, with origins dating back to the early 16th century and later alterations from the 19th century. The building features a facade made of Ham Hill stone ashlar, with a stack, coping, and moulded kneelers on the forward-facing gable, topped by a slate roof. This structure represents the east end of the former grammar school and shares a main entrance with No. 28, located to the left. It stands two storeys high and has a two-window range. All windows are mid-19th century horned 6/6-pane sashes, positioned around a central external stack that is offset above the eaves level and has two string courses at the top. A semicircular sundial dated 1586 is attached to the center of the stack. The entrance, which is in the set-back central block now known as No. 28, features a Tudor arch with foliate spandrels beneath a two-light mullioned window. Inside, the oldest remaining features include wind braces in the roof and a quartered ceiling with early 16th-century moulded beams in the main ground-floor room. The interior has otherwise been significantly altered, primarily reflecting late 19th and late 20th-century styles.
